When the Marvell DSP behind QSFP28 100G SR1.2 hit end-of-life at the end of last year, the market lost a part it had come to depend on. Data center builds had standardized on it for 100G-to-400G connectivity over multimode. Then the part went away.

The replacement chip shipped. We built samples, ran them through our lab, and approved them for production. We’re supporting this solution again.

Qualification

What changed under the hood

The original 100G SR1.2 ran a Marvell DSP that hit end-of-life. The new generation runs a Broadcom DSP. 400G SR4.2 optics still run Marvell — so a 400G-to-4x100G breakout now has a different chip vendor on each end of the link. That’s the exact scenario worth proving out, so we proved it. Broadcom SR1.2 to Marvell SR4.2, on live hardware in our lab, before we approved the part.

If you qualified the previous generation, this is a new build. We’re telling you that up front so your engineers can plan accordingly — and so they know what it was tested against.

For the engineers designing the BOM

On the cabling: the QSFP28 SR1.2 is duplex LC and carries 100G on two fibers. The 400G SR4.2 side is MPO. A 400G-to-4x100G breakout runs an MPO harness out to four duplex LC pairs, and we supply that cable too — so the whole link is one BOM and one vendor.

We tested this across a wide range of platforms in our lab. We code in-house, so if you need a platform or configuration that isn’t on this list, we can usually build it. Our Cisco and NVIDIA-certified pre-sales engineers are available to work through the design with you before you commit to a spec.
