Fiber media converters were introduced in the early 1990’s as a way to connect existing copper networks to the new fiber optic networks being installed. Today, the media converter is still popularly used for the same purposes. While fiber optic cabling is growing more popular to connect buildings, the internal structured cabling of each building is generally copper. By using media converters, individual LANs can be brought together to form one large campus environment. The price for media converters is much lower than investment in a new switch, as well as less intrusive and labor intensive than running new wiring.
GigaTech offers a variety of media converters for many different purposes. With speeds from 10Base-T to 10GBase-T, connections including LC, SC, and ST, and distances up to 100KM there are options to complete almost any network.
